Bay of Married Pigs
Carrie heads to The Hamptons to stay with her friend Patience and her husband, Pete. After a trip to the bathroom, Carrie runs into a pants-less Pete in the hallway. He stands there in a Hanes white T-shirt, sipping his coffee, naked from the waist down. Carrie turns the encounter into an awkward joke she tells over muffins and fresh orange juice. Patience pales, and the next thing Carrie knows, she’s on a bus back to Manhattan.
She crowdsources the experience over brunch with the girls. Miranda and Samantha agree that married women are threatened by their single counterparts, but a naive Charlotte refuses to believe this. Samantha thinks married women are afraid single women will seduce their husbands. Miranda says if they don’t fear single women, they pity them.
Remember, this is 1998. Women were expected to get married and start a family. Almost 60% of the population was married. In the 25-34 age bracket, only 13% had never taken the plunge and were single. If you think being a single woman is difficult now, imagine what it was like twenty-five years ago.
